DELHI: Over 120 MPs from different parties within the INDIA bloc, including Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, have written to Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, asking for the withdrawal of changes made to the Right to Information (RTI) Act through the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act, 2023.
In their letter, the MPs said, “We, the undersigned Members of Parliament, hereby urge you to repeal Section 44(3) of the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act, 2023, which amends the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005.”
They added, “This amendment poses a serious risk of undermining people’s ability to access critical information under the RTI Act. Specifically, the amendment to Section 8(1)(j) of the RTI Act, as introduced by Section 44(3) of the DPDP Act, seeks to exempt all personal information from disclosure.”
The new amendments were brought in indirectly through the DPDP Act and place a complete ban on disclosing personal information. This even affects journalists, who will no longer be able to publish personal data in the public interest—even if it is obtained.
“We believe that the legal framework for privacy and data protection should complement the RTI Act and in no way undermine or dilute it,” the letter further said. It also pointed out that some parts of the DPDP Act go against the very principles of privacy and freedom of expression.
INDIA bloc voices strong opposition
Leaders like Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, Supriya Sule of NCP (SP), Priyanka Chaturvedi of Shiv Sena (UBT), along with members of JMM, RJD, and others signed the letter. They called for an urgent withdrawal of the amendments, arguing that the changes under the DPDP Act seriously weaken the RTI Act and hurt the citizens’ fundamental right to information.
