NEW DELHI – Seven people, including a woman and two children, were killed and 38 others injured in intense cross-border firing along the Line of Control (LoC) and International Border (IB) in Jammu and Kashmir, after India carried out missile strikes on terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
The Indian Army responded strongly to the ceasefire violations by Pakistani forces, officials said. Artillery units were also brought into action on both sides.
All seven deaths occurred in the heavily affected Poonch district, where 25 people were also injured. In addition, 10 people were injured in the Uri sector of Baramulla district and 3 in Rajouri district, officials confirmed.
The Army said in a statement:
“During the night of 06-07 May 2025, Pakistan Army resorted to arbitrary firing including Artillery shelling from posts across the Line of Control and IB opposite J&K.”
Three civilians died due to this indiscriminate firing and shelling, the Army added.
Photos from hospitals in Uri showed civilians receiving treatment for injuries caused by the Pakistani shelling.
The cross-border firing came after India launched Operation Sindoor early Wednesday morning, striking nine terror targets in Pakistan and PoK using precision missile strikes.
According to the Indian Defence Ministry, the attacks were carefully planned and restrained.
“Our actions have been focused, measured and non-escalatory in nature. No Pakistani military facilities have been targeted. India has demonstrated considerable restraint in selection of targets and method of execution,” the Ministry said.
The Indian government linked the strikes to the recent terror attack in Pahalgam.
Pakistan’s army said six sites were hit, including Bahawalpur (a Jaish-e-Mohammed hub) and Muridke, the Lashkar-e-Taiba headquarters, both located in Pakistan’s Punjab province.
